Touro College Appoints Dr. Michael Szenberg Distinguished Professor of Economics and Business

New York, N.Y. – Michael Szenberg, Ph.D., was appointed as a distinguished professor of economics and business at Touro College. A renowned economist who has authored numerous scholarly volumes, Dr. Szenberg will also serve as chair of the economics and business department at the Lander College of Arts and Sciences (LAS) in Flatbush.
“In Dr. Szenberg, Touro has gained a brilliant academic, a well-known economist and a skilled researcher and author,” said Dr. Alan Kadish, president and CEO of the Touro College and University System. “Moreover, with his unique ability to interact with students and ensure they get the most out of their college experience, Dr. Szenberg is a major asset to LAS and to all of Touro.”
Besides his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Szenberg will supervise the operations of the economics and business department and oversee decisions regarding faculty appointments. He will also advise students on course selection, majors and internships, and counsel them on potential career choices.
“My hope for my position at Touro is that, even when teaching large classes, I will be able to focus on each individual student,” said Dr. Szenberg, who lives in Brooklyn. “As a youth, Judah Ben Samuel of Regensburg set out to change the world, only realizing later that he had to start small and focus on improving his community. As a teacher I recognize that I have significant influence and I hope to take advantage by—even in large classes—focusing on helping each individual student reach their potential.”
Before coming to Touro, Dr. Szenberg served as a distinguished professor of economics at the Lubin School of Business at Pace University since 1998. The editor-in-chief of The American Economist between 1973 and 2001, Dr. Szenberg has authored and edited 20 books, more than 50 journal articles, 19 chapters in books, 28 encyclopedia entries and, as the consulting editor at Oxford University Press, commissioned more than 50 handbooks. He has also supervised 40 doctoral dissertations. His books include “The Great Recession: Major Religious Perspectives on the Global Economic and Financial Crisis,” “Distressed U.S. Industries in the Era of Globalization” and “Economics of the Israeli Diamond Industry,” for which he won the 1971 Irving Fisher Monograph Award.
At Touro Dr. Szenberg will continue to publish his scholarly works. In January two of his edited books, “Secrets of Economic Editors, Experiences of Journal Editors,” and “Eminent Economists II, Their Life and Work Philosophies,” will be published by MIT Press and Cambridge University Press, respectively.
“The College is greatly privileged to have added such an outstanding scholar and teacher to our faculty,” said Stanley L. Boylan, Ph.D., Touro’s vice president of undergraduate education and dean of faculties. “We are particularly pleased that an academic leader such as Dr. Szenberg has consented to serve as chair of the department of economics and business, one of the strongest and most vital departments of Lander College.”
Dr. Szenberg graduated Summa Cum Laude from Long Island University and earned his Ph.D. from the City University of New York. Over the course of his career he’s been the recipient of numerous awards, grants and honors, 13 of which came during his time at Pace. Additionally, the International Executive Board of Omicron Delta Epsilon (the Economics Honor Society) and the editors of The American Economist recently established an annual award for the best article published in their publication, which will be called “The Michael Szenberg Prize for the Best Annual Article.” Pace published the expressions of gratitude written by Dr. Szenberg's former students on its website.
