Students with the drive, vision, discipline and leadership to change the world, start here.

Our Honors program is based on the premise that when bright, self-motivated students are given the opportunity to interact in an academically stimulating environment, they’ll thrive, developing their innate talents. Flatbush Honors Students meet one Friday a month in colloquia that focus on the ideas contained in recently published popular scholarship on important, and timely, concepts.

What We’re Studying

During the Fall 2015 semester, the Flatbush Honors students discussed the vision for a Jewish future in Jonathan Sacks’ A Letter in the Scroll: Understanding Our Jewish Identity and Exploring the Legacy of the World’s Oldest Religion and explored the similarities between the thought of the Chofetz Chaim and the economic micro-lending models of Banker to the Poor: Micro-lending and the Battle Against World Poverty by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.  The significance of the Internet in modern society, both positive and negative, was the theme of a discussion of Clay Shirky’s Cognitive Surplus: How Technology Makes Consumers into Collaborators, and the semester concluded with a session on behavioral economics as described in Chip and Dan Heath’s Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die.

Each colloquia ends with a charge - members are given a challenge to develop before the next meeting. Working collectively and individually, our Honors students have designed a social media-based response to terrorism in Israel, identified the face of poverty in their respective communities, and field-tested theories on producing positive change on a global level.

Besides high-level academic work in their chosen fields of study, our Honors students are looking to make a contribution to the world and leave their mark on it.
