Accounting is one of the most respected, opportunity-rich careers available, and earning your degree is the first step toward becoming a licensed CPA. At Touro’s Lander College of Arts & Sciences (LAS), you don’t have to choose between speed and flexibility, because our accounting program is built for both.

Most importantly, when you graduate from our program, you’ll be fully qualified for CPA licensure across the United States. No extra credits, no last-minute catch-up — just a complete, well-supported path from day one.

At LAS, we do more than teach accounting. We prepare students to thrive in professional environments without compromising who they are.

Why Study Accounting at LAS

Accounting is one of the most popular majors at LAS, and it’s easy to see why: every organization and business needs accountants. From the start, you'll choose the path that fits you best — a traditional or accelerated track — and begin working toward CPA readiness with a plan aligned with your goals.

The curriculum starts with a foundational business core and builds into advanced coursework that gives you everything you need to sit for and pass the CPA exam and be ready for licensure in New York, New Jersey, and beyond.

Along the way, you’ll tap into a network that’s as strong as the academics. Our accounting faculty and advisors have deep, long-standing relationships with top firms, hedge funds, real estate organizations, nonprofits, and more. They’re committed to opening doors, from helping you land meaningful internships to introducing you to real career opportunities.

These placements aren’t just luck. Faculty and career services work closely with students throughout the process, leveraging alumni networks and making warm, well-timed introductions.

It’s a very quick program compared to most, which is amazing. You can be in and out in a very short period of time, and that’s what I was looking for — something that was quick and straightforward.

Choose the Accounting Track That Fits Your Needs

number 2

With the second-highest CPA exam pass rate of any college or university in New York State, Touro LAS offers two flexible options for earning a BS in accounting:

Standard Track: 24-30 Months

The standard accounting degree offers a structured yet flexible approach that most students complete in about two and a half years. You'll start with the business core and foundational accounting courses that introduce key concepts and professional tools.

Then, before you dive into the advanced coursework, you’ll take screening exams to make sure you're ready for what's next. If more prep is needed, we’ll help give you the skills, training, and confidence to succeed when you retake the exam. This is all part of our commitment to continuous support as you pursue your degree.

Once you’ve passed the screening exams, you’ll move into upper-level accounting classes that prepare you for CPA licensure and real-world practice — including tax, audit, financial reporting, and forensic accounting.

Accelerated Track: 17-22 Months

Our Accounting Institute is an accelerated, high-intensity track for students ready to move fast. You can complete your bachelor's degree in just 17 months, and if you choose to continue, finish your MS in Accounting in another 5 months.

Here's what this path looks like:

  • Two required summer sessions that keep momentum going year-round
  • CLEP and challenge exams to help meet general requirements efficiently
  • Off-semester and smaller-format classes
  • Reduced tuition rates that make the degree more cost-effective

Because this track is so intensive, it’s ideal for highly motivated students who are clear on their goals. Not every student chooses to pursue the MS, but the pathway is open for those who do. You’ll receive personal guidance on whether the accelerated pace is right for you — and support to succeed at every stage.

Both routes include everything you need to sit for the CPA exam and earn your license — without needing to supplement your education later.

I heard about Touro while I was in seminary in Israel, and what really stood out was the frum environment and how supportive everyone was. I’d taken two years of accounting classes in high school and I was interested in it, but only once I started taking classes did I know I wanted to get my bachelor’s in accounting. I chose the accelerated program, which is intense, but it’s doable — and worth it — if you’re focused.

Meet the Accounting Faculty

What sets LAS apart is the depth and relevance of our faculty’s experience. Many of our faculty members are Touro alumni, and all are invested in helping students succeed. Here are some of the professors you’ll study with:

  • Professor Devora Ehrlich is deputy chair of the accounting department and advisor for the women’s cohort of accounting majors. With a JD degree from New York University School of Law, she is a CPA and practicing lawyer with a background in corporate law. In addition to teaching classes like Intermediate Accounting II, Professor Ehrlich mentors students from their first accounting course through screening exams and beyond, helping them stay focused, confident, and on track for CPA licensure.

  • Professor Simon Saltz is a CPA with more than 40 years of teaching experience at Touro. He also was an auditor and financial analyst for New York State for over 30 years. He is an advisor to the men’s cohort of accounting majors and is very involved in mentoring his students both during and after their time at Touro.

  • Professor Shulem Rosenbaum is an alumnus of the LAS accounting program and has been teaching at Touro since 2014. He is also a key member of the team at the prestigious accounting and advisory firm of Roth&Co. He is very involved with our students on how to navigate the business world and the accounting profession. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Elijah Watt Sells award.

Our faculty members know what it takes to get you from college to career, and they’re ready to help you get to where you want to go.

Every professor is there to guide you through the process and see what they can do to help you move forward, which you don’t find at most schools.

Professor Spotlight: Yossef Newman

Brooklyn-born Yossef Newman brings both personal and professional depth to his role as a professor at Touro. A proud Touro alum, he launched his career with a student internship at DE Shaw and advanced to a leadership role at Deloitte, where he served as an audit director and helped shape national R&D strategy in accounting and auditing technology.

After starting a successful analytics consulting firm focused on the government and nonprofit sectors, he returned to Touro to share what he’s learned. He now teaches at LAS and is known for blending technical excellence with personal mentorship.

“I see myself in many of my students,” says Newman. “I can relate to their experiences, both those they have already had as well as those they are likely to face as they move forward professionally.”

Professor Newman’s students agree. Many have described impromptu one-on-one conversations after class that turn into full mentoring sessions about careers, life, and everything in between. Whether it’s a complex accounting question or advice on navigating a corporate internship, Professor Newman is the one they call.

“The most rewarding part of teaching,” says Newman, “is when a student tells me they used something we discussed in class during a job interview and it helped them out.”

As a frum professional who has thrived in corporate America and remained deeply rooted in his community, Professor Newman serves as a powerful role model for students navigating both worlds.

All the accounting professors genuinely care about your success — not just in class, but in your career. They align everything with the CPA exam and encourage you to reach out with questions anytime. Professor Saltz is one of my favorites. His class is so logical and organized, which makes the material easier to grasp.

Course Spotlight: Contemporary Accounting Problems

Contemporary Accounting Problems (EBAN 451) goes beyond textbook learning to focus on the professional mindset and technical depth required in the field. As the senior capstone, this class challenges students to apply everything they’ve learned across their coursework to real-world scenarios.

You’ll explore complex, high-stakes topics such as:

  • Stock buybacks and their accounting implications
  • Cryptocurrency standards and emerging FASB guidance
  • Advanced consolidation techniques and global integration
  • Research methods using the Accounting Standards Codification (ASC)

The course also tackles CPA exam topics that students often find daunting. You’ll get structured practice, problem-solving strategies, and guidance that makes the material approachable. In this course, theory meets application and students start thinking like professionals.

Students often come in intimidated by accounting. Our job is to demystify the process and give them a framework they can trust. We train students to think critically — that’s what helps them stand out in interviews and on the job.

- Professor Devorah Ehrlich

You’ll work closely with faculty and advisors to identify the right next move and leave prepared and positioned for success.

Alumni Spotlight: Esther Drillick

In 2024, accounting graduate Esther Drillick was named one of just 11 recipients of the prestigious Elijah Watt Sells Award, granted to the highest scorers on the CPA exam nationwide. Established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) in 1923, the award recognizes exceptional performance on the Uniform CPA Exam and honors Sells, who was one of the first CPAs in the USA.

Out of more than 74,000 test takers, Esther achieved a cumulative average above 95.5 across all four sections — a reflection of both her dedication and the strength of her education at Touro.

“When I began studying for the CPA exam, I was amazed that it was mostly a review of what I had learned at Touro.”

Today, she serves as a fiscal officer at YVY Early Childhood Center, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit that receives significant government grant funding. In her role, she manages compliance and reporting for multiple agencies, anticipates audit risks, and ensures the organization operates with financial integrity. It’s a fast-paced, detail-oriented position — and exactly the kind of challenge her Touro experience prepared her for.

“All of my accounting professors really cared about the success of their students. Not just in terms of learning the material, but also in terms of networking, finding internships and jobs, and building our careers,” she said. “They always offered students the opportunity to reach out and ask for help in any way they needed.”

Student tip: If you’re aiming for a competitive role — especially at a Big 4 firm — start looking for internships early. Go to the fall career fair, talk to your professors, and don’t wait until the last minute. I received accounting elective credit for a finance internship, which was a great way to get experience and stay on track with my degree. - Esther Aufrichtig (Accelerated BS Accounting, ’26)
