Caring for a community starts with strong leadership. At Touro’s Lander College of Arts & Sciences (LAS), our healthcare administration certificate gives you a 360-degree view of what it takes to lead a safe, supportive skilled nursing or assisted living facility.

With the demand for senior care rising and jobs in health services management projected to grow 29% by 2033, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, now is the ideal time to earn your certificate.

Our goal is to prepare students not just to pass the licensing exam, but to lead with heart. We teach them to see residents as people — not patients — and to manage every part of the business with professionalism and purpose.

— Professor Joseph Stern

Why Choose the Healthcare Administration Certificate at LAS

Many of our students come in with a Bachelors in Talmudic Law (BTL) and are looking for a profession that aligns with their values, honors their background, and offers both stability and opportunity. This certificate builds on that foundation — without requiring a full second degree. Here's what sets our program apart:

Accelerated Timeline

Finish all required coursework in as little as 2 semesters, so you can move quickly into the training and exam phase of licensure.

Community-Focused Approach

Courses are led by instructors who understand the Orthodox Jewish community, and many of our graduates work in Jewish-owned senior care facilities.

Flexible and Accommodating

Streamlined coursework and Zoom classes make it easier to balance school with work, family, and community obligations.

Strong Salary Outlook

Certified nursing home administrators earn salaries comparable to CPAs and MBAs, which means long-term financial stability alongside meaningful work.

Inside the Certificate: What You’ll Learn

To prepare for New York State licensure as a nursing home administrator, students complete five courses that cover every essential area of long-term care leadership:

Gerontology: Needs and Assessment

In this course, you’ll explore the biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging while also gaining practical tools for managing elder care. Topics include Alzheimer’s disease, elder abuse, post-traumatic stress in seniors, and more. This course also helps students understand state audits, surveys, and what’s required to run a compliant, person-centered facility.

Personnel Management in Health Care

From HR best practices and retention strategies to laws and regulations affecting healthcare workers, this course delves into everything you need to know to lead teams in a long-term care setting.

Financial Management in Long-Term Care

Master the tools of healthcare finance in this vital course. You’ll learn how to create operating budgets, manage costs, and respond to reimbursement models. These are critical skills for maintaining financial health in a nursing home or assisted living facility.

Legal Aspects of Long-Term Care

Learn to navigate the legal and ethical issues that affect long-term care facilities in this course, where you’ll study torts, court procedures, DNR policies, elder rights, and privacy laws. You’ll leave this course prepared to lead with both compassion and compliance.

Long-Term Care Administration: Services and Facilities

Want a top-down look at what it means to manage a long-term care facility? This course examines operational regulations, administrative functions, and the types of care residents receive.

Upon completing this 5-course certification, you’ll fulfill New York State’s 100-hour education requirement for licensure as a nursing home administrator so you can move forward on your path to training placement and exam readiness.

Meet the Faculty

Certificate courses are taught by Professor Joseph Stern, who brings a unique blend of scholarship, business acumen, and healthcare experience to the program. A longtime rabbi with an MBA and PhD in business, Professor Stern has worked extensively in hospice care and understands the needs of Touro students.

Move Forward Toward Licensure with AIT and Exams

After finishing the certificate, students begin the Administrator-in-Training (AIT) phase — a supervised 1-2 year internship at a licensed skilled nursing facility. This hands-on experience is a required part of the licensure process and offers practical training in budgeting, compliance, staff leadership, and resident care. Touro students have secured AIT placements at a 500-bed nursing home in New York City, a privately owned long-term care center in Queens, and other locations.

Once AIT is complete, you’re eligible to sit for the NAB (National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards), which includes these components:

Passing these and meeting additional qualifications is required for licensure in New York. Throughout the entire process, Touro faculty stay closely involved in helping students navigate the AIT phase, prep for exams, and secure placements.

After Touro: Careers and Opportunities

Students who receive the healthcare administration certificate, complete training, pass their exams, and gain NY licensure become nursing home administrators, assisted living directors, admissions directors, and healthcare facility operations managers. Recent Touro graduates have landed roles at Long Island Jewish Hospital and Boro Park Center.

Other students choose to pursue graduate programs at the Touro Graduate School of Business (GSB), including:

Although these graduate programs are not focused on long-term care, they provide broader training in healthcare leadership and policy.
