The poetic works of Chaucer, with particular attention to the Canterbury Tales. Prerequisite: HMLN 101 or permission of the instructor.
Seventeenth Century
LLEN 332 - Milton (3 credits)
Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, Samson Agonistes, and selections from the important prose tracts. Prerequisite: HMLN 102 or permission of the instructor.
LLEN 333 - Seventeenth Century Literature (3 credits)
The major poets, including Donne, Herbert, Marvell and Jonson, and the development of seventeenth-century prose. Prerequisite: HMLN 102 or permission of the instructor.
Restoration and Eighteenth Century
LLEN 345 - Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Drama (3 credits)
The development of English drama from the reopening of the theaters in 1660 to the masterpieces of Sheridan and Goldsmith. Prerequisite: HMLN 102 or permission of the instructor.
LLEN 346 - Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Literature (3 credits)
Tradition and innovation in the Augustan age, with emphasis on Dryden, Pope, Swift, Fielding, and Johnson. Prerequisite: HMLN 102 or permission of the instructor.
Nineteenth Century
LLEN 351 - Romantic Poetry (3 credits)
The major English poets of the Romantic Movement: Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats. Prerequisite: HMLN 201 or permission of the instructor.
LLEN 352 - Victorian Literature (3 credits)
English literature between 1830 and 1900, with special attention to Dickens, Arnold, Browning, and Tennyson. Prerequisite: HMLN 201 or permission of the instructor.
LLEN 371 - American Literature Before 1900 (3 credits)
Representative works from the colonial period to the end of the 19th century, with concentration on such later writers as Poe, Melville, Hawthorne, and Twain. Prerequisite: HMLN 201 or permission of the instructor.
LLEN 319 - Works of Jane Austen (3 credits)
The six published novels: Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. Also the various early, unfinished, or unpublished works: Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon, and the Juvenilia. Prerequisite: LLEN 102 or permission of the instructor.

Plays by Ibsen, Chekhov, Strindberg, Shaw, Brecht, Pirandello, et al.
LLEN 361 - The Modern British Novel (3 credits)
The major works of Conrad, Forster, Joyce, Woolf, and Lawrence. Prerequisite: HMLN 201 or permission of the instructor.
LLEN 372 - The Modern American Novel (3 credits)
Major twentieth-century novelists, with emphasis on James, Dreiser, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner. Prerequisite: HMLN 201 or permission of instructor.
LLEN 373 - Modern American Poetry (3 credits)
The poems of Whitman, Frost, Pound, Cummings, Stevens, Williams. Prerequisite: HMLN 201 or permission of the instructor.
LLEN 402 - Literature of the Holocaust (3 credits)
"Literature of the Holocaust" follows a chronological framework, considering a variety of genres that take up the prelude, the events themselves, and the aftermath of the Holocaust.

Intensive practice in expository writing, with special emphasis on the preparation and composition of research papers.

The writing of short fiction: study of writing techniques in contemporary literature; class discussion and analysis of student manuscripts.

- All English minors must take Modern Literature I and II (Flatbush) or at least two of the Literature/ Humanities survey courses (Manhattan)
- At least three of the five courses in the minor must be taken at Touro University. Core courses in literature do not count toward the minor.
