Nechama Birnbaum: Right Hand Woman
“I love the sciences. Becoming a Physician’s Assistant has been a dream for me since I was young.”
Besides interning in the ER department at Downstate Hospital, Nechama shadows a PA. “Watching her diagnose patients, I’m getting an advanced knowledge of the field before I’m actually in it.” But she’s also a medical assistant twice a week at Pediatrics Associates, where she greets patients, takes their vitals and history, and does odds and ends. “Just typing for the doctor lets me learn a tremendous amount about what typical well visits and sick visits are like.”

BEHIND THE SCENES
One of the things I’ve learned from my PA is the importance of having a concerned—but not pitying—bedside manner. There’s a very fine line. Also, I love the fact that I can learn about the sciences and anatomy in class, and then see what I learn applied practically—live!—in the hospital and doctor’s office.
