If you thrive on logic, patterns, and problem solving, mathematics offers a powerful lens through which to understand the world. As a mathematics major, you'll gain valuable analytical thinking, critical reasoning, and modeling skills that can open doors to diverse career opportunities.

What You Can Do as a Math Major

No matter your professional path, the problem-solving, critical thinking, and quantitative skills you will develop as a math major are highly valued across industries, including finance, technology, healthcare, policy, and more. Here are some opportunities that start with a math degree:

  • Become an Actuary: Use your skills in probability, statistics, and modeling to help businesses assess risk. Actuarial careers offer excellent salaries, strong job security, and opportunities across industries like insurance, finance, and consulting. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of actuaries is projected to grow 22% from 2023 to 2033—much faster than average.
  • Teach Mathematics: Share your love of math by becoming a middle or high school math teacher. Many graduates continue into Touro’s Graduate School of Education to earn a master's degree in mathematics education, preparing them to inspire the next generation of problem solvers and critical thinkers.
  • Dive Into Data Science: Turn your math background into a springboard for one of today’s fastest-growing fields. With training in mathematical modeling, statistics, and logic, you’ll be ready to tackle roles in data analytics, machine learning, and business intelligence. Companies are always looking for people who can make sense of numbers and solve real-world problems.

As a math major at Touro’s Lander College of Arts & Sciences, you’ll build skills that open countless professional doors.

Coming from the yeshiva world, it made a big difference to have professors who could relate to my background and experiences. Professor Eli Cohen, in particular, made the material feel approachable and always took time to go over things with me.

Why Choose Mathematics at LAS

The mathematics program at Touro’s Lander College of Arts & Sciences (LAS) is small by design, but big on opportunity. You’ll benefit from intimate class sizes, close mentorship, flexibility, and the kind of faculty dedication and attention that’s hard to find in larger programs.

Every math major completes a faculty-guided capstone project that reflects their unique interests. Here are a few examples of recent student projects:

  • The Mathematics of a P&C Actuary
  • Mathematics in the Torah
  • The Failing U.S. Math Education System

Whether you’re planning to teach, pursue graduate studies, work as an actuary, or transition into a field like data science, the math major provides a solid foundation and the support to get you there.

I really liked the compound interest course. It felt super practical. We covered annuities, bonds, and how to calculate investments. It was math I could actually use in real life.

Meet the Mathematics Faculty

Our faculty members bring a breadth and depth of experience to the classroom, with passion and expertise across pure and applied mathematics, actuarial science, and statistical modeling. Meet a few of our faculty members:

Prof. David Wohl is an expert in pure mathematics, spanning differential geometry to group theory. He brings both deep theoretical knowledge and a deep commitment to student learning.

Prof. Eli Cohen is an actuary by training and has taught at Touro for over 20 years. He brings real-world expertise in financial and statistical modeling, helping students understand how mathematical concepts apply to business, finance, and insurance careers.

Dr. Leon Kaganovskiy is an applied mathematician who recently published Applied Statistics with Python: Volume I: Introductory Statistics and Regression. He focuses on bridging theory and practice, making him a favorite among students interested in applied research and programming.

Known for their accessibility and commitment to student success, our math department provides a supportive learning environment where you’re encouraged to ask questions, explore complex topics, and grow academically and professionally.

Course Spotlight: Finite Mathematics

One standout course in the department is Finite Mathematics (MAT 240), a survey-style class that gives students a taste of multiple mathematical areas without diving into heavy proofs. It’s especially popular with students who love applying math to real-world problems — from probability and logic to voting theory and algorithms.

This course is a core part of the math curriculum and a great fit for anyone considering careers in education, technology, or business, as well as for anyone who wants a big-picture view of how math plays out in the real world.

More About the Mathematics Major
